O Homem das Multidões aka The Man of the Crowd, Marcelo Gomes and Cao Guimarães, 2013

Could have been just another arbitrary art movie: neorealism collapsing into high concept, all reality effects absorbed by the painfully visible efforts needed to produce them. Saved solely by its gimmick: the 1:1 aspect ratio. What the quadratic screen does to faces (containing them without ever entrapping them). And what the face does to the quadratic screen (destroying all symmetries, completely taking over the obtrusively mondrianesque mise en scene). A triumph of humanism over art (school).
